About Lori Duffy Foster

Welcome! I am a former journalist who writes fiction and nonfiction from the hills of Northern Pennsylvania, where I live with my husband and four children. I was born and raised in the Adirondack Mountains of New York State, where part of my heart remains. The Adirondacks is the setting of my first novel, Spring Melt, a 1920s courtroom drama that is seeking a publisher.

Raising Identical Twins College took me from the Adirondack Mountains to the shores of Lake Ontario, where I attended SUNY-Oswego and earned a bachelor's degree in two majors: Interpersonal Communications and English/Writing Arts. I took a few graduate courses at Syracuse University while working full-time, but SU did not have a part-time MFA program. So I earned my master's in creative writing from Binghamton University.

For the first 11 years of my career, I wrote about everything - crime, education, politics, the military, running, Native American affairs - for The (Syracuse, N.Y.) Post-Standard. I loved my job. I lived on adrenaline. I ran a bunch of marathons. I ran 5Ks most every weekend. I still couldn't get enough. That's when I met my husband, Tom, a fellow journalist and co-author of Their Darkest Day, an account of the terrorist bombing of Pan Am Flight 103.

When I became a mother, I gave up my full-time career to be home with our kids and to pursue my other passion: fiction. I have taught college English as an adjunct; worked as a technical writer; freelanced as a writer and editor; started up my own Web-based business and worked as a taxonomy specialist to add to my experience and help pay the bills. In my spare time I write novels.

Our life together has taken us all over the country. Our two oldest were born in Arizona and our twins were born in Ohio. But we are here now, in my husband's hometown, and we are here to stay. My short fiction has appeared in the journal Aethlon, and in the anthologies Short Story America and Childhood Regained. My nonfiction has appeared in Healthy Living, Running Times, Literary Mama, Crimespree and Mountain Home magazines.

I have four complete novels - all crime - and two others under construction. Raising Identical Twins: The Unique Challenges and Joys of the Early Years is my first published book.
